In August I’ll be teaching on my first Arvon Foundation residential writing week! Join Julia Armfield and I at the lovely Totleigh Barton for ‘Starting to Write Fiction and Non-Fiction: the many ways to tell a story’, with guest tutor Cathy Rentzenbrink…
In this course, you will explore the exciting and diverse forms that fiction and non-fiction writing can take, and work on the ways that writing from life and writing from nature can be adapted for different genres.
You may be the type of writer who is constantly making notes on the things you see around you but is uncertain of how to shape these notes on the page. You may be the type of writer who is overflowing with personal stories, but still unsure whether to channel them towards fiction or non-fiction. Experienced writers and tutors Julia Armfield and Nick Hunt have devised a course that will help you give shape and purpose to your ideas, developing your character work and storytelling whilst also digging down into the ways you respond to the landscape around you. You can expect lively discussion and generative writing exercises, delivered in open and supportive sessions with your tutors, and the opportunity to focus your attention on how best to communicate your experiences and ideas. We will help you find ways to channel your thoughts via fiction and non-fiction and discover a voice that is specific to you.
Whether you’re just starting or have an early piece of work in progress, this week will offer plenty of writing prompts and opportunities for growth, supporting you to generate new work and find new confidence.
