This time ten years ago I was trudging towards Istanbul, in the footsteps of a man who did that journey eight decades before. My intention was to see what had changed since Patrick Leigh Fermor walked that way – but in the decade since I set out, Europe has changed once again. The refugee crisis, Brexit and Covid would make that journey much harder now, if not impossible.
