Introduction to Travel and Nature Writing

Whether your writing is inspired by adventures to faraway lands or the changing seasons in your local woods, this workshop will give you an introduction to writing travel and nature. Through exercises and group work, you will learn how to develop your ideas into engaging pieces of writing; how to make stories with observations, field notes and memories; how to develop your writing voice and craft a narrative arc; how to write vividly about place; techniques for combining the subjective with history, culture, ecology, deep time and memory; and, most importantly, how to be a good travel companion. We will touch on how travel writing has moved on from its colonialist past, and what nature writing means in a time of climate breakdown.

The workshop will combine teaching, short writing exercises, group discussion and feedback sessions, as well as outdoors techniques that I have found particularly useful in tuning into place. Suitable both for experienced writers and those just starting out. Bring a pen and a notebook.
